Main strategy for the sustainable development of tourism is defined as follows:
Vision to develop tourism sustainably in Mongolia is defined as follows based on research grounds: "To contribute to education of a Mongolian who creates, cherishes and asserts human and national values through ensuring the goals of sustainable development of the environment, society, culture, and economy through the effects of the tourism industry".

Development trend of the industry: To become a bridge connecting the local brand to the capital city and the local and city brands to the world and be sector to deliver practical use of the green consumption, circular economy, urban development, electronic applications and implementer of investment, SME, national promotion, cultural production, soft power policy.
Vision of the Mongolian Tourism Association is to be an umbrella organization representing all participants in the tourism sector of Mongolia, to protect the common rights and interests of its members and to connect the government and the private sector to develop tourism as a leading economic sector.
Valuable assets of the Mongolian Tourism Association: Private businesses in the tourism sector, wealth creators, Association members and supporters Principles of the Mongolian Tourism Association: Maintaining the optimal management of the public and private sectors and providing unified management and coordination and to work to ensure stable and operational security of private business in the sector.
Main strategy for the sustainable development of tourism is defined as follows:
- Improvement of optimal governance and institutional system of the destination,
- Development of sustainable tourism on the basis of principles of environmental, social and economic balance,
- Creation of national marketing to expand the tourism market,
- Increase of investment in destination management and infrastructure development,
- Development of competitive edges of tourism products and services,
- Promotion of tourism sector of Mongolia in foreign countries and regularization of marketing activities in the target market.
Competitiveness criteria of the tourism industry shall be renewed and developed as a development guide in combination with the feature of our country and global trends.
For instance, supporting environment, social and economic factors and criteria of the sustainable tourism shall be implemented through:
- Reduction of the negative impact on the environment,
- Preservation and protection of the cultural heritage,
- Increase of social and economic benefits for local people,
- Ensuring of long-term sustainability:
1. Economic capability. To ensure competitive edges of tourist destinations and businesses for long-term efficient and sustainable existence.
2. Employment quality. To increase the level of employment of local people with assistance of tourism, improve its quality, balance the payment amount, service conditions, and gender ratio of employment.
3. Tourist satisfaction. To ensure safety and satisfaction of tourists and not to discriminate them because of age, gender, or ethnicity.
4. Livelihood of local people. To improve life quality of local people through supporting comfortable life and resource consumption, and eliminate social degradation.
5. Integrity. To protect urban and rural areas and prevent from environmental degradation.
6. Resource efficiency. To keep use of non-renewable resources at minimal level to develop tourism services.
7. Local development. To better involve local people in the future development and management of the tourism region, decision-making of the authority and management and regional planning.
8. Social equality. To extend and expand the social and economic impacts of tourists and allocate a certain part to poverty alleviation.
9. Local control. To involve local people in decision-making, planning and future development and management of the tourism region.
10. Cultural heritage. To respect unique historical culture, heritage and customs of local indigenous people.
11. Biological diversity. To support and enhance protection of the environment and wildlife habitats and the mitigation of potential threats to them.
12. Clean environment. To support the reduction of waste, water and air pollution generated by tourism businesses and tourists.
Main principles of the Mongolian Tourism Association shall be considered as development of the tourism industry in the following three main areas:
- Leisure tourism
- Business and MICE tourism
- Health, education or special tourism of the field.
- Collaboration of the stakeholders. To develop guidelines, regulations and code of ethics to develop new tourism destinations, review non-standard and uncertified construction activities, to carry out thematic trips such as health, yoga, organic, meditation, adventure, cultural revival, religious, voluntourism.
- Zoning of tourism. To set certain restrictions for tourists when entering special and sensitive natural areas, to execute joint management agreements with enterprises providing tourism services, to improve their capacities.
- Waste and pollution management. Waste and litter deteriorate environmental aesthetic value as well as causing a negative impact on the environment and wildlife.
- Therefore, information technological solutions to warn officials responsible for monitoring waste immediately are needed.
- Hygiene, sanitation and safety coordination. It is required to prioritize protection of health and safety caused by the coronavirus epidemic, to define hygiene and sanitation standards in detail, and to enforce them in organizations providing tourism services. For instance, sanitization of the living area and kitchen, preparing food with organic ingredients, making the food preparation space transparent to the public, organizing training on first aid and medical assistance, building a fully automated toilet, etc. All of these efforts shall ultimately increase the supply cost of the product.
- Smart consumption. We need to adapt to the changes in the electronic and technological use, management of information, communication, ordering, feedback, and supply and demand alterations. We also must ensure that tourists are provided with opportunities to protect the environment, respect local characteristics, and participate in environmental assessment and conditions through mobile phones, applications, and various systems. Furthermore, digital transformation of tourism regions eliminating paper use in tourism areas, food delivery keeping distance, land tagging and using modern advanced technology in waste management is one of the many steps towards development.
- Hyperinflation and stabilization of inflation. A value chain sustainable in the long term, strengthening progressive flexibility and distributing profits directly to local communities is crucial.
- Professional staff. To develop human resource policy among professional staff, intersectoral staff, strategic human resource, or in cooperation between ministries and the private enterprises.
- Sectoral and cross-sectoral cooperation. To activate real returns based on research, and collaboration based on the interests of tourism companies, and to facilitate and stimulate stakeholders through leadership.
